Spain Update 2

The Madrid Indymedia website [http://madrid.indymedia.org/], which is pretty far to the left in orientation, is posting messages from radical groups. I don't know how widespread the sentiments being expressed are, but clearly some Spaniards will not be satisfied with mere reform. They are trying to ignite a revolution.

At the website's header they call for an indefinite general strike. Next to this one reads:

The banks strangle us.
The bosses exploit us.
The politicians lie to us.
The unions sell us out.

Below it is a banner headline from a week ago which reads "We are going to demonstrate in OUR plaza beginning at midnight Sunday. Onward to rebellion and self-rule!

Below this is an article [5/19] from a anarchist group calling itself the "Wild Bunch," which is entitled "Politics without politicians, all power to the assemblies." [http://madrid.indymedia.org/node/17355] They refer to the ad hoc popular assemblies which have formed in the 70 or so "camps" around the country. In other words, they want to dissolve the government of Spain in favor of these bottom-up, participatory, democratic, people's parliaments.

From 5/18 there's an article "THE STATE and its political parties are counter-attacking. The elected junta HAS PROHIBITED encamping in the Puerta del Sol."

Another article exhorts "Today: A large citizen's assembly will be held at 8pm. They can't stop us! [http://madrid.indymedia.org/node/17310]

These are the voices of militant radical revolution. It might be easy to dismiss them as unrepresentative, but judging by the turn-out for the protests in general and the assemblies in particular, Spain may be reliving 1936. I hope so.

Viva anarquismo.
Viva Durutti.
Viva la revolucion.
Viva la gente libre.
