The MEK has been on Washington's payroll for a long time. This campaign is in preparation for direct funding from the national budget, rather than the clandestine money they have been receiving.
Originally the MEK was part of the Islamo-socialism movement in the ME popularized by Zulfiqar Bhutto in Pakistan and Ali Shariati in Iran. Needless to say, this anti-capitalism made them anathema to Washington, hence their designation as a terrorist organization.
It is hard to see how this new incarnation of MEK, putatively secular and certainly no longer socialist, will counterpose to the regime in Tehran as they now agree upon just about everything ideologically. Of late they issue the usual vacuous rejoinders about corruption and repression, but if they are removed from the terror list they will certainly be compromised in the eyes of the legitimate opposition in Iran by their newfound favor with Washington. They could not function as a populist movement, so it is likely they will perform some other function.
Anyway, the rogue's gallery of high-ranking aparatchiks who have lent their bad names to the delisting campaign means it is sanctioned by the Pentagon and will occur. The upcoming war on Iran lurches forward.
