The Greek Bailout, A Vicious Fraud

International banks, under pressure from European governments to help with another Greek bailout, discussed buying back the country's bonds in another attempt to stitch together a rescue plan after a French initiative failed.

As Napoleon put it before he shut down the banks (oh, those were the days!), "The hand that lends is higher than the hand that borrows." Here we see the representatives of the people, their elected officials, going hat in hand to the capitalists and begging for mercy.

European Central Bank and Greek government officials as well as international and Italian banking executives met lobby group the Institute of International Finance (IIF) in Rome on Thursday, an Italian Treasury source said. Another source close to the discussions said Deutsche Bank took part.

The banks are struggling to strike a deal which would let private sector creditors provide cash and breathing space to Greek debtors without being defined as a default by credit ratings agencies -- which have warned they are watching closely.

In the first paragraph we find the all-too-familiar, incestuous relationship between capital and state policy-making institutions (even though in this case it too is a corporation).

In the second we are treated to the grotesque farce that the ratings agencies are watchdogging the banks.
What is not revealed is that the banks own the ratings agencies, and have since the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999, which overturned the long-standing New Deal prohibition against such partnerings. For instance Moody's, which just "junked" (to use the more polite term) Portugal, is owned by Berkshire Hathaway (that's Warren Buffet of Odisha land grab fame, and Wells Fargo etc.).

ECB signals more rate rises to come, helps Portugal [???????????]

You can't say Reuters doesn't have a sense of humor.

Tightening the money supply is not going to help Greece, Portugal, Ireland or anyone else. It's a deathblow.

(Reuters) - The European Central Bank raised interest rates for the second time in three months on Thursday and signaled a further hike is likely this year to tackle inflation despite the intensifying euro zone debt crisis.

The ECB also offered help to hard-pressed Portugal after ratings agency Moody's downgraded its debt to junk status this week, pledging to keep providing it with liquidity regardless of ratings.
Yes, after they've jacked up the rates. Gee, how magnanimous of them.

"Today's news conference has made crystal clear that the ECB remains geared toward further monetary tightening, despite the lingering debt crisis," said ING economist Martin van Vliet.

Although financial markets are anxious to know what steps the ECB might take if the euro zone crisis worsens further, Trichet repeatedly refused to discuss them and said he would prefer instead to discuss traditional monetary policy.

Leaving the news conference, Trichet said he hoped next month's briefing would focus primarily on monetary policy rather than "other issues."

Other issues? Are there other issues? This is the head of Europe's central bank. This is an astonishing comment.

With help like this Portugal is doomed.

Dylan Ratigan Gives Wall Street The Big Finger

Tyler Durden of Zero Hedge:

..the former Fast Money lead man is actually pretty spot on. And for all you retail investors who think this market is anything but a two-tiered playground built now exclusively for Wall Street to fleece you every single day, our advice is to get the hell out. Everyone else already is... Except of course for the banks and the various 3-3,000 man quant operations, which are the only market participants left. We hope they cannibalize whatever is left of each other and blow themselves all up in the process. Whatever is left will have infinitely more credibility than the busted mockery of capital markets we have now.

Please remember that both Durden and Ratigan are (heaven help them) committed capitalists, true believers. Their appraisal may seem like hyperbole, but try telling that to the people being clubbed over the head by police in the streets of Athens.

Time For Our Fascist Pig O' The Day Award, And The Winner Is...

Ruth Wisse is a loathsome, vulgar propagandist. From her pen at Harvard, she has been a-oinking and a-squealing for years that Palestinian aid agencies have a genocidal agenda against the Jews. Unrestrained by truth or scruple, she has attacked anyone who has dared to criticize Israel, and always with the the mother of all tag lines--(a one, a two, a one two three four) anti-Semitism. I have written a couple of e-mails over the years to newspapers who published her filth in which I corrected a number of her--oh let's be charitable--mistakes. These corrections, I assure you, I documented copiously. Never a response let alone a correction/retraction.

The worst of it is that this revolting liar has a post at Harvard. This woman is nothing more than a tabloidist for Zion! It is a measure of how corrupt our institutions of higher learning are that they would confer legitimacy on a foul, racist pig like her by offering her a position. What would happen to an Arab who insisted that Zionism was nothing more than a genocidal plot against Palestinians? I think we know the answer.

What's even more galling is that she really is an oaf. Not only are her racist attacks baseless, they are stupid as well. I invite you to read some of her agitprop online (barf bag highly recommended). The woman doesn't write or think very clearly, yet Harvard abuses its student body by allowing her to enter a classroom.

Anyway, watch this, the charge she makes would make Joe McCarthy blanch.

The Fed is a private bank to whom broad monetary and oversight powers has been ceded. Allowing these banksters to set monetary policy is like allowing the mafia to run the FBI.

Analysis: Portugal poisoned by Greece in cut to junk status update

The downgrade has had the predictable effect.

Portuguese Bonds Hit 12% For First Time Ever After Moody's Downgrade

They refer here to the yield. In other words, this is very bad for Portugal and will make it harder for them to sell their bonds.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/quote?ticker=GSPT10YR:IND

And, a bit surprising, the EU has come out with a condemnation of the move. It may be feigned, but this does surprise me. It appears that the Union is acting responsibly here.

BRUSSELS (MarketWatch) -- The downgrade of Portugal's sovereign debt by Moody's Investment Service Inc. is an "unfortunate episode" that's based on hypothetical scenarios, as the country is just starting to implement its austerity program, the European Commission said Wednesday.

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/eu-regrets-moodys-downgrade-of-portugal-2011-07-06

And Moody's, or their owners I should say, are not finished yet.

Warning over Irish credit rating

Ireland's credit rating may be cut to junk by Moody's Investors Service after Portugal yesterday lost its investment grade rating, analysts said today.

Moody's, which slashed Portugal four notches yesterday to Ba2 from Baa1, in April lowered Ireland's credit rating to the lowest investment grade Baa3 and left country's outlook on negative.

The ratings company cut Portugal's rating in part because the nation may not be able to return to debt markets in the second half of 2013.

Ireland has been locked out of markets since September, and the yield on 10-year Irish bonds has climbed 2.43 percentage points to 11.77 per cent since November 26th, two days before the European Union and International Monetary Fund agreed the country's rescue package.
"If not re-entering the public funding markets has significance for a sovereign's rating, then clearly if our view proves correct, then Ireland will suffer an imminent downgrade," Cathal O'Leary, head of fixed income sales at Dublin-based NCB Stockbrokers, said in a note today.

(Remember high yields are bad for the bond issuer.) Here Ireland is being threatened for "not re-entering the public funding markets." The reason they haven't is the bad rating they've received has pushed their yields sky high. Who wants to issue bonds when you will have to pay 11.77 percent on them! So here we have a ratings agency making the issuing of bonds nearly impossible, and then punishes a nation for not doing so. Clearly Wall Street is trying to force Ireland into doing something that may be good for Wall Street but god awful for Ireland. Let's call this what it is--predation.

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2011/0706/breaking29.html

And it's working:

Analysis - Weak economy may force second bailout of Ireland

Ireland needs domestic demand to take off if it is to persuade markets that its gross government debt, estimated by the IMF to peak at about 120 percent of GDP in 2013 compared to 157 percent for Greece, is sustainable in the medium term.

But people are hesitant to hit the shops with the unemployment rate stuck close to 17-year highs and the country only mid-way through a six-year cycle of austerity.

The national savings rate is around 11 percent, nearly triple what it was in 2008 when the recession kicked in, and the supply of consumer loans continues to shrink.

Analysis: Portugal poisoned by Greece in cut to junk status

What most people don't realize is just how corrupt Wall Street is. Remember these are the same rating agencies that colluded in the sub-prime scam and a million others. The manipulation of ratings is much more likely a strategic calculation than a reflection of an actual change in the credit worthiness of a given bond issuer. In this case it is almost certainly in furtherance of the implementation of the new model of neocolonialism now being fostered on Greece. As far as I am aware, there has been no sea change in Portugal's economic viability.

Propaganda Alert: Tanker With Million Barrels of Oil Is Ablaze Off Yemen After Pirate Attack

A tanker carrying about 1 million barrels of fuel oil is on fire off the Yemeni coast after pirates used a rocket-propelled grenade to attack the ship in a maritime corridor handling about 20 percent of world trade.

Gee, these "pirates" have some nice toys to play with.

The ship is being towed by two tugs and there is no risk of a spill,

Is that how one eliminates the risk of a spill? A pair of tugs? How exactly will these tugs prevent a rupture or other leak in the hull?

Oops, a little truth slips out:

If it were an attack by pirates and they started the fire, it would be the first such incident, said Harrie Harrison, a spokesman for European Union Naval Force, or EU Navfor. The group has yet to confirm pirates were involved, he said.

If? You mean there is some doubt? And yes it would be a first.

I don't know if there was an accident of some kind and this is a cover story, or an attack was carried out upon the tanker by either anti- or pro-Saleh forces, but this pirate stuff is nonsense.

Against Stocasticism: Monkeys, Particle Accelerators, Lee Harvey Oswald, WMD, And Diseducation

Let's start with a quiz, who said this:

The individual is handicapped by coming face to face with a Conspiracy so monstrous he cannot believe it exists. The American mind simply has not come to a realization of the evil which has been introduced into our midst.
Many Americans believe absurdities, our ruling class and its government couldn't survive otherwise. One of the worst delusions is that of American exceptionalism. It is the belief that we Americans are better than the people of other nations, more civilized, more reasonable, better educated. Our guys are good guys, when we do something wrong it's because of incompetence, or an incomplete understanding of a particular problem, or a flawed solution. But our intentions are always good, and they are so because our guys are good guys.

And it for this reason that some people categorically dismiss "conspiracy theories" as inane. For such people a simple presentation of the facts will not suffice as an honest weighing thereof is impossible for them. The school system, media, and government have so compromised their critical faculties that one must penetrate layer after layer of socio-political conditioning just to draw a dull gaze.

If one follows the link to Ed Haslam, St Tammany Parish, you will hear him give a speech in which he alleges that Lee Harvey Oswald was an intelligence agent of the US; that he was involved in a biological warfare program; that the intelligence community murdered people as part of the development of these biological weapons, and then murdered a scientist who worked on the project to protect it from public scrutiny; and that while he was doing that work Oswald was infiltrating the plot to kill JFK for the FBI. I will leave you to determine whether he proves his thesis.

However, this fascinating story does reveal a few things which can be proved, and which demonstrate beyond dispute that the US government has acted in a reprehensible way, and is responsible for countless American deaths, and the diseducation of generations of Americans.

The first lie we have been told for decades that can now be corrected is Jonas Salk. He has been celebrated as the brilliant scientist who came up with the polio vaccine and saved millions of lives. Well as it turns out not only is Salk not one of histories great geniuses, but is perhaps science's greatest screw-up. The vaccine didn't save lives, it sent millions to early graves by giving them cancer. It was Salk's idiotic mistake which was responsible for the meteoric rise in cancer fatalities in the years since the introduction of his lethal vaccine. (For details one can read Haslam's Dr. Mary's Monkey, or Debbie Bookchin's The Virus and the Vaccine. I recommend both, with the former being a little more entertaining.)

It gets worse, not only have we been taught to revere a schmuck, but when the government realized (after ignoring warnings from concerned scientists whom they had tasked with experimenting with the vaccine) what had happened, they perpetrated a decades-long fraud on the American people.

Salk's blunder was in using the wrong strain of the polio virus, and doubling his mistake by choosing a faulty method for sterilization. What Salk didn't know at the time was that certain viruses caused cancer. He didn't know this because when he went to school it was widely believed (and taught) that viruses couldn't cause cancer.

What government researchers eventually discovered was that the sharp rise in cancer fatalities was due to the fact that the polio virus used in the vaccine was grown on the kidney cells of monkeys. These kidney cells were thought to contain no harmful microorganisms. That was wrong. One of the viruses, SV40, is extremely carcinogenic. When America queued in endless lines to receive the much ballyhooed vaccine, they were injected with cancer.

To cover their blunder, the government perpetuated the myth that viruses could not cause cancer so as to prevent research in this area. And, more despicably, generations of research scientists and medical students were still taught that viruses couldn't cause cancer. Your doctor, your child's pediatrician, were taught things which the government knew were not true, in an effort to keep the people from discovering the government's massive, lethal mistake.

So, there has been a decades-long conspiracy at the highest eschelons of our government, a conspiracy which has been successfully kept secret through several administrations, and long enough so that all liable for the horrendous miscue are now gone. And the result of this conspiracy was that doctors were diseducated, and their advice to patients thus compromised; and much-needed research into the causes of the sky-rocketing cancer rate was stymied at the cost of who knows how many American lives.

This is not a conspiracy theory, this is a conspiracy fact. And in fact there is much more, strange things happened over the decades to scientists who seemed to be on the verge of discovery, odd mishaps to those who began to suggest that maybe we are wrong to think that viruses couldn't cause cancer. But here these are theories and not yet proven...

And if you listen to the audio you will learn that the government has had information exculpating Lee Harvey Oswald and vindicating Jim Garrison and has suppressed it for thirty years.

The Rape Of Greece Update, July 5: The Mosler Plan

The following is an outline for a proposed new Greek government bond issue to provide all required medium term euro funding for Greece on very attractive terms.

The new bond issue includes an addition to the default provisions that eliminates the risk of loss to investors. The language added to the default provisions states that while in default, and only in the case of default, these transferable securities can be used directly, by the bearer on demand, at face value plus accrued interest, for payment of any debts, including taxes, owed to the Greek government.

My god will it ever end? Is there no slaking capital's thirst? If you were foolish enough to believe that these vultures were trying to solve Greece's financial crisis, then this should disabuse you. Forcing Greece to accept their own irredeemable bonds as payments of any debt owed to it might sound like justice, but it will bring that nation to default for sure. They are strapped for cash now, decreasing their real revenue by substituting uncollectible debt will surely cause an implosion.

Greece is part of the Euro Zone so it cannot devalue its currency nor print more a la the US. It has reduced the incomes of its citizenry to such a drastic degree that they can no longer spend, and hence reduce government revenues from taxation etc. Now this will reduce Greece's revenue even more. This isn't putting out the fire, this is dousing it with fuel.

As I have been saying all along, the banksters are not trying to "rescue" Greece, they are plundering it. They will buy what they want at the auction they have imposed, and take the proceeds from the rest of the sales. Then they will watch Greece collapse into rubble, and scavenge amongst the ruins.

According to Mosler's website, this plan is now "making the rounds in Europe." He's a well-connected bankster who offshores for the big fish. If his plan is implemented, the rape of Greece will be complete.

Saudi Arabia arrests female protesters

DUBAI: Two Saudi Arabian women remain in detention after being arrested in Riyadh on Sunday during a protest to demand fair trials for their relatives, sources reportedly told London-based human rights group Amnesty International.

Some 15 women and five children were arrested on Sunday outside the ministry of interior, a press release from the organization said. They had been calling for fair trials for their male relatives, who are being detained without charge – in some cases for up to 10 years.

All but two women were released after they were believed to have signed pledges not to protest again.

Botswana Strike Aftermath Update, July 5

The post-strike repression has been less than I expected and feared. So far as I know, this is the worst.

Botswana teachers not allowed to strike, fall under essential services

Gaborone - Botswana's government said on Monday it had amended legislation classifying essential services workers to include teachers in an effort to prevent more civil servants from striking.

Making the announcement through a government gazette, Minister of Labour and Home Affairs Peter Siele said that veterinary services, teaching services, diamond sorting, cutting and selling services and all supporting services connected to them have now been placed under the essential services.

Diamond cutting? Veterinary services?

Hats off to the brave civil servants of Botswana. They didn't achieve their goal, but they put up a helluva fight.

Two things made this strike remarkable: The first is the numbers, over forty percent of that arid, sparsely populated land are public sector employees; the second is that in most cases when unions strike against employers, even private ones, they confront the government which is invariably partnered with the upper class and work both openly and covertly against the strikers. In this case the government was literally partnered with the upper class. The diamond industry dominates Botswana, and the government co-owns the monopoly diamond producers, Debswana. The other owners are the giant banking families, the Oppenheimers and the Rothschilds. So the union had strength of numbers, and their adversaries had unlimited resources.

When Karl Marx said that capitalism comes to us dripping in blood, he might have been thinking of the Rothschilds. Over the centuries this family has acted with sociopathic ruthlessness in pursuit of their riches (by no means uncommon behavior for members of their class). One couldn't have a more dangerous foe.

The strikers never broke, their leadership gave up, choked, or were co-opted. Once this occurred, the police became more aggressive than before with those workers who refused to capitulate. It was over.

It's easy to look back now and say they never had a chance, but their determination was nothing short of inspirational. I was beginning to think they might prevail, I guess I got carried away a bit.

The Great Civil Servants Strike Of Botswana never got much attention from the international media, and when it did it was derisive or dismissive or condescending, nothing unusual there. There wasn't even much talk of it in union and/or radical circles, not the ones in which I travel anyway. Although it is yet another defeat, this was one of labor's great efforts. The strikers maintained an extraordinarily high level of solidarity. On more than one occasion I thought "well they are done now" only to find our Botswanan brothers and sisters had weathered yet another assault. State terror didn't work against them, neither the police nor the SWAT teams of the Special Forces. They put up one helluva fight.

So to the valiant teachers, nurses, librarians et al of Botswana I offer my condolences. But be consoled in the knowledge that our day is coming. And when it does, you can take some satisfaction in the fact that you have lit the way.

Britain On Strike Update, July 5

LONDON - Hundreds of thousands of public-sector workers the length and breadth of Britain defied slurs and threats Thursday to mount one of the biggest walkouts since the country's 1926 General Strike.

The government tried to claim that less than 100,000 civil servants struck. But the PCS union says that 84 percent of members walked out.

In London cops were pulled off the streets to answer the phones for 999 calls—because 192 out of 202 staff refused to come in to work.

Across the DWP the strike was 90 percent solid.

Revenue and Customs (HMRC) was hit hard. Some 85 percent of workers were off work—around 64,000 people, more than the total 57,000 PCS members in HMRC.

Lessons of Argentina crisis ignored in handling of Greece

Originally published in October 2003, this policy review document was signed off by a then relatively unknown IMF official called Tim Geithner, now the US Treasury Secretary no less.

Strangely enough, he seems entirely to have forgotten about this eight-year-old tome, whose candid and illuminating account of Argentina's descent into economic and fiscal chaos, and the not inconsiderable role the IMF played in the process, provides an object lesson in how not to proceed.

The mistake the author makes is that he assumes Geithner is trying to end the depression. He isn't! He's one of the people who engineered it. The collapse has been a great windfall for the international banking cartel for whom Geithner works. His function is not to undo the damage he helped induce, but to perpetuate it and make it as profitable as possible for the cartel.

Nevertheless, this article demonstrates that Geithner, Bernanke, Greenspan, Rubin, Summers et al are not incompetent, they created this mess intentionally, and they could fix it if they wanted.

PASOK: Pan Hellenic Socialist Kleptocrats By James Petras

Great piece.

“George Papandreou is not bought, he is rented. He sells public enterprises to the multinationals. He reduces wages, pensions and employment at the behest of the IMF. He turns over the public treasury to the European banks. He supports NATO’s war against Libya. He directs the Greek Coast Guard to enforce Netanyahu’s blockade of Gaza.”

According to a demonstrator in Syndigma Square, Athens, July 3, 2011 A self-proclaimed “Socialist” Government in Greece is imposing by ballots and clubs the most far reaching reversals of wages, pensions, jobs, educational, health and tax programs in the history of Western Europe.

The Pan Hellenic Socialist Party (PASOK) has totally abdicated any pretense of being a sovereign government, handing over present and future macro and micro policymaking to the European Central Bankers, the IMF and the power within the European Union/Germany, France). The so-called “austerity” program includes the pillage and auctioning of all the strategic lucrative public enterprises and large scale public land covering all historic and recreation sites. Never has any regime, socialist or not, so blatantly and brutally reverted an independent country to the most unadulterated form of colonial rule.

Yemenis See Through Regime Change Ruse

One truly heartening development in this revolutionary age we are living through is the degree to which people are not falling for imperialism's old tricks. The US-Saudi plan to transfer power to the next in line of succession is no transfer at all. Like the Tunisians and Egyptians, the Yemenis are not buying what they are being sold. The plan is just plain insulting, and they are acting accordingly.

The bad news is that none of these three have been able to unseat their criminal regimes. In Egypt and Tunisia's cases, they have forced capital's front men to flee, but that is not meaningful change in any sense. The people who used to own those countries still do. In Yemen, they haven't even gotten that far.

Paul Krugman At the Economic Rubicon?

Rasmus' pieces are always interesting.

In his July 4 editorial New York Times in-house economist, Paul Krugman, identifies two important facts about jobs and taxes in the U.S. The first is that big corporations are sitting on a record hoard of cash and refusing to use it to invest in the US to create jobs. The second is that the ‘biggest of the big’, the multinational corporations, are sitting on the largest tranche of that corporate cash hoard, demanding even more tax cuts while they continue to shift jobs offshore.

The families of the martyrs went mad literally , they set a police station on fire “It was denied later”. They have cut the Suez Cairo highways. According to eyewitnesses and tweeps in the city the army tanks have entered the city to protect police stations and other vital buildings.

Meanwhile in Cairo !!

At the same time Suez is on fire , Cairo is currently watching what is taking place anxiously especially at El Manial area. I hate to say but once again another police station in Egypt is besieged by angry citizens with the news of murder and torture !! We thought that these days are over but we were so wrong.
Those angry citizens have cut the Saleh Salem highway as far as I knew from Egypt’s no.1 source of news nowadays “Twitter”. One hell of a night indeed.

There is a Day of Rage scheduled for July 8.

Day of Rage : What we Should focus on now

This video compilation for clips from the Friday of Wrath January 28th in Egypt is more that great , seriously great. I recommend that you watch it till the end. Now If you compare between these clips and the clips from June 28th and June 29th strangely you will find very few differences !! The CSF are still the same and the police officers are still the same despite all what happened in these 5 months.

I will not speak about politics and current issues nor about SCAF and the revolution , I will focus on the ministry of interior. We will not have a real stability in the country , we will have a real peace of mind to rebuild our country again , we will not have a real revolution in Egypt as long as the ministry of interior and the police force are living in the illusion of Mubarak’s era.

#July8th : Revolution Phase 2

The American embassy has warned its citizens from being at Tahrir square on July 8th , I believe this warning has to do with the fact that a British citizen and an American citizen were arrested among those arrested last Wednesday morning. Needless to say this news will be used by those opposing #July8 to spread fear. I will not surprised too if I find foreign banks withdrawing money from its ATMs not only Down town but from Cairo itself.

http://egyptianchronicles.blogspot.com/2011/07/july8th-revolution-phase-2.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+EgyptianChronicles+%28Egyptian+chronicles%29&utm_content=Yahoo!+Mail

Chaos reigns in Egypt

Ironically, the police were no where to be found during the build-up around the square. Average citizens quickly scurried away from the area as the sellers could be seen arming themselves. The roads to Tahrir were blocked and traffic came to a stand still in downtown for a number of hours, hearkening back to the uprising that saw millions come to the central area demanding an end to three decades of Hosni Mubarak’s rule.

After last week’s clashes between Egyptians and police in the capital’s main artery, the sense on the street is that the country is again spiraling toward a violent confrontation.

Sadly, this looks inevitable. The West-backed Mubarak-Regime-Sans-Mubarak is not going to just fade away, there will be a bang.

http://bikyamasr.com/wordpress/?p=35348

And when will we have the local councils elections Mr. PM !?

Last week the administrative court ordered the dissolution of local councils in one of the biggest blows to the Mubarak regime legally and administratively as the NDP used to control 98% of local councils across the country. The government has decided to respect the court order and not to appeal.According to the law we should have local councils elections within the upcoming 60 days !!

This seems ominous to me, rather than a "blow" against the regime.

Kudos to the people of Egypt, who will not take no for an answer. Long live the revolution.

And kudos to blogger Zeinobia. Much of the above was culled from her Egyptian Chronicles. It is without doubt the best source of news and, more importantly, analysis on the revolution. If it were up to me, she'd get a Nobel Prize. She's absolutely relentless.

Euro zone warns Greeks on sovereignty and privatization

Euro zone finance ministers have approved a 12 billion euro ($17.4 billion) installment of Greece's bailout, but signaled that the nation must expect significant losses of sovereignty and jobs.

But within hours of Saturday's decision, Eurogroup chairman Jean-Claude Juncker warned Greeks that help from the EU and International Monetary Fund would have unpleasant consequences.

"The sovereignty of Greece will be massively limited," he told Germany's Focus magazine in the interview released on Sunday, adding that teams of experts from around the euro zone would be heading to Athens.

Wow. Just wow.

Greek rescue package will mean a default, warns S&P

This surprised me. Not that the "rescue" package will lead to default, it's supposed to, but that S&P would say it publicly. This suggests dissension in the ranks. The world's biggest gangster bankers are trying to ram this through and a company infrangibly shackled to them comes out with something like this. Who knows...

Meanwhile, Back In Egypt, The Counterrevolution Is Gaining Ground.

Today was the ministry of interior Friday , yes I will call this Friday with that name with my all due respect to the martyrs but seriously Friday we had a common goal : To deliver one message that we had a revolution Mubarak’s ministry of interior !!
Before speaking about today’s Friday protest I have to speak about yesterday. I visited Tahrir square afternoon in a quick visit where I saw the families of martyrs speaking to political activist/blogger/TV hostess Nawara Negm about their sons as well as the wounded.
The families of martyrs and the wounded are extremely angry from the claims of the sick media and the ministry of interior that they are thugs.

Great piece.

The Mubarak-Regime-Sans-Mubarak is up to its old tricks.

“No to the return of police terror,” read one banner from Friday’s protest, when approximately 5,000 converged on the square. The demonstrators have called for July 8 to be the next massive protest, with hopes from organizers on social networks that thousands of Egyptians will take to the streets in continued pressure on the government to bring about the change that they called for during the uprising in January and February.

Activists in the country have accused the military of following Mubarak-styled crackdowns on dissidents speaking out. Already, one blogger has been arrested and imprisoned for criticizing the military earlier this year, while thousands more have been detained and put before military courts.

Since the dictatorship cannot survive a real election:

Egypt looking at e-voting

“E-voting is not a dream,” said Gamal Gheitas, Editor-in-chief of Loghat al-Asr Magazine and IT Editor at al-Ahram. “We need to build the right foundation first by centralizing voters’ information in order to ensure that the elections are conducted fairly and without manipulation.”

He added that synchronizing information from all groups and ministries is an important step in creating a database of voters, which would then be linked to a National ID database for potential voters.

Intel Egypt’s Business Development Manager Hisham Arafa added to this by saying ICT can be instrumental in facilitating parliamentary and presidential elections and that it “can help in the development of e-government and e-democracy.”

That's "e" for ersatz.

A famous Greek documentary-maker describes the savage onslaught against peaceful protesters by Greek police during this week’s 48-hour strike.

I have covered conflicts of protesters and police in various places around the world outside Greece, such as in Argentina, Italy, Bolivia, and Mexico. Especially in Mexico, the police, as many know, are considered savage, untrained and corrupt. However, what I lived through and recorded along with my co-workers yesterday (Wednesday 29/6) at Syntagma, surpasses all limits in savagery. The Greek police rightly, and by a wide margin, gets the prize for barbarity. A barbarity which has no relation to repression but which was a constant flirt with death.

Everything But The Parthenon: Look What You Can Buy in the Greek Liquidation Sale!

Up for sale are 39 airports, 850 ports, railways, motorways, sewage works, a couple of energy companies, banks, defence groups, thousands of acres of land for development, casinos and Greece’s national lottery. George Christodoulakis, Greece’s special secretary for asset restructuring and privatisations, said the sell-off would raise €50bn (£44bn) to help pay back the country’s €110bn bailout debt...The striking thing isn’t simply the distress of the rabbit being hunted, it’s the complacency of the other rabbits as one of their own is being taken down. With banks in the US licking their chops at the prospect of “privatizing” state and municipal assets, the example of Greece is more germane than many of us would like to believe.

What the author implies and what I have been saying all along is that this isn't a rescue of Greece, but a robbery. It is extremely unlikely that the austerity plan agreed upon will enable Greeks to pay off the debt, and the lenders know it. (Remember, banks don't actually lend their money, so they have nothing to lose.) As Demetri Kofinas points out in several of the videos posted on this blog, if what international capital was concerned about being able to redeem their bonds, they are going about it the wrong way. The first round of austerity measures cut Greece's public employees' paychecks by thirty percent, now they are getting cut some more (ITV is reporting another 30 percent). Taxes and fees are being raised. This will have the effect of slowing the Greek economy down to a crawl because nobody will have any discretionary money to spend. Government revenues dry up, resulting in an inability to pay its debt. THe Troika plan is a recipe for a default, and they know it. What is happening is class war, and theft. The Troika isn't trying to stave off a default, they are trying to hasten it, after they loot everything worth having from the yard sale they've imposed upon the Greeks.

Noam Chomsky denounces old friend Hugo Chávez for 'assault' on democracy

Bravo Noam!

What the (hideously overrated) Guardian doesn't mention is that Chavez called Cedeno a "bandit" (which he probably is, he is a banker after all) and denied him the protections of Venezuelan law. When the head of state can break the law and put anybody they please in prison, then that state is not a free one. Chavez added to his crimes by imprisoning the judge who followed the law and released Cedeno.

It is time the left wakes up and recognizes Chavez for what he is. He has been in charge in Venezuela for over ten years and it is still owned by international capital. Venezuela may be a Bolivarian state, but it is obscene to call it a socialist one. And please don't give me all the BS about his welfare programs, socialism means popular, democratic ownership of public institutions, not hand-outs from benevolent oligarchs.

Against Coincidence Theorists And Stocastics:Conspiracies By Paul Craig Roberts

In a June column, I concluded that “conspiracy theory” is a term applied to any fact, analysis, or truth that is politically, ideologically, or emotionally unacceptable. This column is about how common real conspiracies are. Every happening cannot be explained by a conspiracy, but conspiracies are common everyday events. Therefore, it is paradoxical that “conspiracy theory” has become a synonym for “unbelievable.”

When the last missile hit their house, the Marshall had the instinctive reaction to shield his wife with his body. They had just stepped out of the door when they were flung fifteen meters away by an explosion. But they survived.

When Khaled arrived, there was only devastation. His wife, whom he loved so much, and the child she was bearing were gone. His children, for whom he would have given anything, were crushed by the explosions and collapsing ceilings.

Warren Buffet's Odisha (aka Orissa) Land Grab Update, July 3

On my long list of objections to capitalism is the cynicism of it. The authorities in Odisha are now investigating the "abuse" of children in the protests. The state government, which has ordered police to destroy the villagers' vines and rice paddies, is now using the welfare of the village children as pretext to seize the land of their parents. Does it get any lower than this?

NCPCR team in Orissa to investigate 'misuse' of kids in anti-Posco stir

Report by Orissa Diary correspondent; Bhubaneswar: A 3 member delegation of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) arrive in Odisha to investigate the issue of Child rights violation by Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS) for using children politically...The delegation will visit trouble torn Gobindpur to investigate participation of children in anti-Posco stir. It should be noted that nearly 400 children participated in anti-Posco stir against land acquisition. Earlier taking a serious note of alleged "misuse" of children in anti-Posco agitation, the Women and Child Development Minister Anjali Behera has asked the DSWO to give a report on the condition of kids, who had participated in the anti-Posco agitation. The authorities in Jagatsinghpur district said kids were motivated to join the stir by their parents and Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS).

Anti-Posco protest with children illegal: Odisha government

Jagatsingpur: The Odisha government on Monday declared that the Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS) dharna using children as human shields at Gobindpur is unlawful after clamping Section 144 on the area.

“Prohibitory orders have been issued against gathering of the anti-project people at Gobindpur,” said Paradip Additional District Magistrate(ADM) Saroj Kanta Choudhry. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik, however, clarified that the decision was taken at the district administration level. “This is a routine decision,” he said.

After putting land acquisition on hold for 15 days, the Jagatsingpur district administration on Monday morning mobilised 12 platoons of police in Gobindpur for land acquisition...

Maoists call for Odisha bandh on June 30[1]

Bhubaneswar: The CPI (Maoist) has opposed State Government’s land acquisition drive in Dhinkia and Gobindpur, for the proposed site for Posco steel project and has called for a bandh on June 30.

In a statement on Monday, State organisational secretary of the Maoist party Sabyasachi Panda said, the ruling Government, had been displacing the locals from their native land only to hand it over to a foreign company. The forcible method it has adopted to acquire land is not acceptable, he added.

If the Maoists do come to the defense of the villagers they will of course be denounced as terrorists.

Capitalism, The Science of Exploitation

Yes, the Rich Did Get Richer

The World Wealth Report, released Wednesday, found that last year was not just a good year for the really wealthy. It was also a good year for the merely rich. The number of people with more than $1 million to invest was 10.9 million, up 8.3 percent, while the amount of money they had, $42.7 trillion, had risen by 9.7 percent. (The wealth of this group excludes the value of their primary residences, collectible items and consumable goods.)

Rich Tax Evaders, like Sharks on Blood, Want More

Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) has cut its income taxes by $7 billion since 2005 by booking roughly half its worldwide profits at a subsidiary at the foot of the Swiss Alps that employs about 100 people.

Now Cisco, the largest maker of networking equipment, wants to save even more — by asking Congress to waive most federal taxes due when multinationals bring such offshore earnings home. Chief Executive Officer John T. Chambers has led the charge for the tax holiday, which would be the second since 2004. He says it would encourage companies to “repatriate” as much as $1 trillion held abroad, spur domestic investment and create jobs.

Another Glorious Day In The History O' Capitalism: The Children's Strike Of 1835:

On July 3, 1835, in Paterson, New Jersey, nearly 2,000 textile workers walked off the job. The strike was notable for several reasons.

For one thing the strikers weren't demanding more money, despite the fact that they only made $2 a week (adjusted for inflation, that would be $44 a week today). Their central demand was an 11-hour day (as opposed to the 13.5-hour days they were currently working), and only 9 hours on Saturday instead of a full day.
That in itself was significant enough. The first strike in American history to limit hours had happened only 7 years earlier, and was also in Paterson, New Jersey. That strike had been crushed after a week when the militia was called in.

At Behest of Banks, Fed Relaxes Debit Card Regs in Final Rule

After their efforts, the rules were loosened and their implementation delayed until October. But banks have warned that they still plan to increase consumer fees.

“Consumers will still see higher fees for basic banking services, and banks—particularly community banks—will still feel the revenue pressures that this rule will cause,” American Bankers Association president Frank Keating said in a statement [13]. “We will continue to aggressively advocate for remedies that will mitigate any harm caused by this regulatory action.”

Greece Update

According to ITV, the latest austerity measures would result in the loss of 150,000 jobs for Greek workers. Don't know how reliable this is because the reporter also asks a woman he interviewed in the street "Why should Germany or France pay for Greece's debt, shouldn't you pay?" France and Germany are not paying Greece's debt! They initially bought Greek bonds as an investment, not as an act of philanthropy. And now they are accepting a rollover, in which case they are receiving new bonds in the amount of the old bonds plus the interest they would've paid; or they are lending Greece money at interest so that they can pay off the bonds those two countries are holding. Greece is in no way getting a deal, they are just digging themselves a deeper hole. There is nothing altruistic in what Germany or France is doing, nothing!

I've posted this before but in case you missed it (?), here's a link to an audio presentation of the first round of austerity measures Greece was made to suffer. If you think that the collapse of '08 was organic, and that what has ensued is an honest attempt to stabilize the world's economy rather than a raiding of it, you really should listen to this.If nothing else it is a detailed account of just what the banksters did to Greece the first time around, and how they planned this new phase. That &@%#ing Wikicreep

The megalomaniac poseur Assange takes credit for the Egyptian Revolution.

I found this at the Egyptian Chronicles blog (below), where it and some comments pissed me off so I replied. I don't know if Zeinobia will post it so I paste it here:

Brava, Zeinobia!

At Gary Lord: Can't deny W' contributed to Arab Spring? First, I get to decide what I can deny, not you. Second, I deny it! The dubious W' Tunisian cable was released two days AFTER ben Ali fled. Once again, that is AFTER ben Ali left the country. The fact that loyalist media like CNN and the Washington Post post-dated the lie doesn't make it true. Perhaps it is you who should contemplate changing news sources.

Did Muhamad Bouazizi's immolation have no effect? It happened months before the cable was released. Wikileaks was neither cause nor catalyst for the Tunisian revolution. Assange had nothing to do with it.
And what of Khaled Said? Was his murder not important? Should Zeinobia replace his photo with one of Julian Assange?

I wonder if this isn't just another case of racism. What Gary Lord is suggesting is as insulting as it is absurd. One has to believe that Arabs are just too darn stupid to understand when they are being oppressed, and need Julian Assange to enlighten them. One must believe that the people of Egypt and Tunisia were sitting around contentedly thinking they had it made until they saw those cables, and then millions of people poured into the streets as a result. That anyone attribute these uprisings to Assange, and that he now takes credit for them, is condescension and defamation toward the Arabs. It is an outrage.
I'm 51, and the Arab Spring has been the most exciting political development of my lifetime. The sight of all those brave people uniting against injustice has occasionally filled me with awe, and moved me to tears. To see these glorious eruptions of hope and humanity reduced to the machinations of one man, demeans not only the event, but the valor and brilliance of the people who made them happen. It is just obscene.

Ps, Those wishing to make contributions to Wikileaks can make their check out to the Central Intelligence Agency...

Marxism 2011: Trade unionists and activists gather in central London

Nicos Loudos brought greetings from Greece. He said, “The movement from Egypt is sweeping through Spain into Greece. Greece has seen a massive radicalisation. We’re not thinking about how to fix the system, we’re thinking about ways to overthrow it.”

Yippee!

Striking London teacher Jess Edwards said, “Who can now say that the working class in this country is dead?

“They say strikes are for Greece. But we have more in common with Greek workers than we have with Tory toffs. We’re fighting for the future.”

Bravo, Jess, well said! For me nationalism is the greatest folly of all. It's not only a scoundrel's refuge, but it is the biggest obstacle to peace and social justice. The idea that we should be faithful to, owe allegiance to, those people who are pissing on our heads because we were born inside the same artificial boundaries arbitrarily drawn by the ruling class of yore, the oligarchs who pissed on the heads of our forebears, is the state's greatest con. That loyalty should be vertical, that we should abandon our own interests to ally with those who suck the blood out of our veins when their profits are at stake in other venues, is capital's greatest canard. Truth cannot ally with power, it can only yield to it. It cannot be in my interest to aid the class which exploits me in its efforts to seize the resources and labor of another nation. As an American, I am supposed to feel confederacy with the people of Wisconsin in their struggle because they are my fellow Americans. However, I am expected to be indifferent to the agonies of the Greek people because they live in a different cage. But the people who occupied the Capitol in Madison, and the people throwing rocks in Syntagma Square are fighting the same foe. The same international ruling elites who own the US also own Greece. The same deprivations being imposed on us, have also fallen on the shoulders of the Greek people, albeit in greater measure.

If the Greeks manage to overthrow their treasonous government, and establish a real democracy, and decide to default or unilaterally reschedule payments; and, hypothetically, the US intervenes militarily to protect its "vital national interests," which side should the people who occupied the Wisconsin Capitol support? Can it ever be morally justifiable to protest free-market reforms oneself, and then join in an attack on a people who overthrew a government which imposed just that? Of course the state doesn't care about such niceties. International capital owns America, and America owns us, so if we would refuse to go and destroy the Greek revolution, we will be incarcerated. Citizenship isn't an entitlement, it's a branding iron.

Workers to Pocono Medical Center: You Can’t Do That!

This one even surprised me.

We should file this one under: “Can they really do that?”

The short answer should be: “Only if we let them.”

How Pocono Medical Center (PMC) thought it would get away with flagrant disregard for the law, no one knows, but what we do know is that they’re busted and going to trial on August 15th.
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)has filed a formal complaint against PMC for its unlawful activity. The Board, following a two-month investigation, has charged PMC management for a whole laundry list of bad stuff.

Khaled Said Follow Up

Said is the young man responsible for setting off the rebellion in Egypt. He was in a cyber cafe when he noticed something unusual. He trained his camera on two cops and another person and, as it turned out he was recording the police receiving their kickback from the drug-dealing they permitted to occur. Somehow, they became aware of Said and dragged him out of the cafe and into a squad car. Shortly thereafter Said's mutilated corpse surfaced (can't remember the details). His jaw had been broken and suffered many another hideous injury. His autopsy photos can be viewed online, but I warn you, they are the stuff nightmares are made of.

The police in question are on trial, and it appears the Mubarak-Regime-Sans-Mubarak is trying to protect them.

COLOMBIA: 'Impunity' – Keeping the 'Black Hand' Anonymous

"Our greatest ally in South America."*

Warning: This article is horrifying.

"I would like to ask the victims, the country, whether Colombia is really ready to hear the truth, because every time we talk about the people who have benefited from the war, the 'heroes of the fatherland' come out to call us liars.

So, we better not talk again about the people who are untouchable in this country, and we'll just continue talking only about the peasant who farmed manioc or coffee, who doesn't matter to anyone.

Here we say that we cut off his head, that we chopped him up, that his wife was raped, that we stole his plot of land, and no one is shocked. But when we talk about the people in this society who benefited or had ties to the self-defence forces, oh yes, then we're causing a scandal, and we're 'dishonouring' these people.

But the people we decapitated, the widows who saw their husbands or their sons cut up alive in front of them – we haven't dishonoured those people.

"I'll Pay One Half Of The Work Class To Shoot The Other Half."

The critical moment in any revolt is when the organs of state power, the police, army, intelligence services etc., are ordered to fire upon the rebels. More often than not they do, but when the demands of the protesters are popular, and when they are numerous enough that when the police, always working class people themselves, look upon the people they are ordered to kill and see friends, relatives, old classmates etc. sometimes they refuse to comply.

So far at least, the Greek police have, most foolishly, remained loyal to the state.

But as more images like these emerge, it is bound to create dissension in the state ranks.

So as the "forces of order" fight the people of Greece on behalf of international capital, eventually something must give. Usually, it's the protesters who give up or are overcome. But, as in every rebellion, there's a chance of police defection. And so far the protesters have shown no sign of giving up..

And at times appear to be winning, occasionally giving state terror a dose of its own medicine can do wonders for revolutionary esprit de corp.

So as the people of Greece roil their ancient streets to free themselves from the ravages of capitalism, will the forces of the criminal order break ranks with the plutocracy as has happened in every successful revolution in history, or was American industrialist scamster Jay Gould correct when he said that the working class can always be bought to turn against itself? The odds are always with the state, they hold all the power and have a monopoly on force, that's what states are for, but the longer this goes on, the harder it will be to retain the loyalty of the police.

The Strauss-Kahn Fraud Update

The New York Times reports that even though the forensic evidence makes clear there was a sexual encounter between the former head of the IMF, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the prosecutors (!) have found the witness to have told enough lies to them to put their case in jeopardy. She may have connections to drug dealers and criminal rings.

From the Times (hat tip Scott):

The sexual assault case against Dominique Strauss-Kahn is on the verge of collapse as investigators have uncovered major holes in the credibility of the housekeeper who charged that he attacked her in his Manhattan hotel suite in May…

Since her initial allegation on May 14, the accuser has repeatedly lied…Among the discoveries, one of the officials said, are issues involving the asylum application of the 32-year-old housekeeper, who is Guinean, and possible links to criminal activities, including drug dealing and money laundering….

Given the intense media defamation campaign against the Former IMF chief, wacko conspiracy theorists like me wondered if he had been set up. If so, the woman in question must have been in a position to be blackmailed, or actually be a spook herself. From what we are reading these days, both possibilities are still viable.

The Strauss-Kahn Fraud May Be Coming To A Close

(Reuters) - Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was released from house arrest on Friday after prosecutors said the hotel maid who accuses him of attempted rape lied to a grand jury and made other false statements.

Strauss-Kahn's lawyers want the charges dropped. The judge said prosecutors will reexamine the evidence after they revealed the maid lied to a grand jury about her actions after the alleged attack and on tax and immigration documents.

Lied about what she did after the attack, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. What is it she didn't want to reveal?

Mine Agency: Disaster 'Could and Should' Have Been Prevented

The investigation into the death of 29 miners at the Massey Upper Big Branch coal mine in April 2010 has revealed that the company maintained two sets of safety records. The practice kept hazardous conditions secret so Massey could keep digging for coal.

GOP Goes To Bat Again For NAFTA

They objected to the inclusion of any trade adjustment assistance (TAA) in the Korea FTA, on fiscal austerity grounds. Or, as Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah),

"Unions and other anti-trade zealots gleefully use TAA data to make the case that trade causes outsourcing and job loss... Instead of helping build the case for trade, TAA certifications are used to show that trade is bad. In the end TAA really is just a government subsidy for anti-trade propaganda."

Yes, reality is so uncooperative with corporate spin sometimes!

The new African land grab

The "town" chief of the village seemed to be in a state of shock.

Sitting on the front porch of his mud and thatch home in Pujehun District in southern Sierra Leone, he struggled to find words that could explain how he had signed away the land that sustained his family and his community.

He said he was coerced by his Paramount Chief, told that whether he agreed, or not, his land would still be taken and his small oil palm stand destroyed. He didn't know the name of the foreign investor nor did he know that it planned to lease up to 35,000 hectares of farmland in the area to establish massive oil palm and rubber plantations.

Haltingly, he said that without his land, he might as well take his leave of the village. By that he meant that he was as good as dead.
